About the Business

Our Finance, Digital and Customer Support Division oversees the department's budget and financial compliance responsibilities, its infrastructure and assets portfolio, as well as procurement and quality assurance functions, digital, data and technology and screening and financial transformation programs. They provide support and strategic advice across the department regarding a range of DHS goals, systems and processes. 

Role Details

The Interpreting and Translating Centre (ITC) is a business unit within the Department of Human Services and has been supporting South Australians for over 51 years. Established in 1975, ITC is one of Australia's longest-standing government interpreting and translating services and provides high-quality, confidential language services in more than 100 languages and dialects.

Each year, ITC delivers approximately 70,000 interpreting and translating assignments for South Australian Government agencies, businesses, community organisations and individual clients, helping people access essential services and information regardless of the language they speak. ITC is proud to be a NAATI Endorsed Language Service Provider, demonstrating our commitment to nationally recognised standards of quality, practitioner engagement, security and service delivery.

The Interpreting and Translating Centre (ITC) is seeking multiple casual Interpreters and Translators in a variety of languages. As an Interpreter or Translator, you will enable effective communication between people who speak languages other than English and English-speaking service providers, government agencies, businesses and community organisations.

Applicants must have appropriate training and practical experience as an Interpreter or Translator. Applicants who hold current NAATI Certification are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants without current NAATI Certification must be willing to obtain NAATI Certification within 18 months of employment and must have completed formal studies in interpreting or translating. Successful applicants will be required to complete provide a National Police Check and a South Australian Working with Children Screening Check.

The Interpreter and Translator roles are within the Finance, Digital and Customer Support Division and are accountable to the Manager, Interpreting and Translating Centre for:
• undertaking interpreting and/or translating assignments that result in effective communication for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
• delivering high-quality, accurate and professional interpreting and translating services
• contributing to the efficient operation of the Interpreting and Translating Centre
• maintaining professional and ethical standards in accordance with industry requirements and NAATI expectations.

Assignments may include:
• face-to-face interpreting
• telephone interpreting
• video interpreting
• written translation services

Special Conditions

National Police Check required.
Employment-related Screening Check required.
Some out-of-hours work may be required.
Casual role with varied and irregular working hours.
Applicants must hold current NAATI Certification relevant to the language and service they provide or be prepared to obtain NAATI Certification (or Recognition) within 18 months of commencement of employment.
Applicants who do not currently hold NAATI Certification must have successfully completed formal studies in interpreting or translating, including a minimum qualification such as: Diploma of Interpreting (Spoken Language); Introduction to Translating Skill Set; Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set; or an equivalent recognised qualification in interpreting or translating.
Evidence of qualifications and/or NAATI Certification will be required as part of the recruitment process.
Duration: Term up to twelve (12) months.
